SoundCloud is a music and audio platform that allows users to upload and download content. Think YouTube but specifically for audio.

Podcasters, musicians, comedians and more have grown SoundCloud into the largest audio platform in the world.

It's easy (and free) to set up an account and start uploading content.

In this tutorial, we'll provide links and information that will help you get set up and running.

Get It

https://soundcloud.com/

  1. To get started, visit https://soundcloud.com/ and click on "Create account" in the upper right hand corner

2. After you have clicked on "Create account" you have the option to create your account using your Google account, your Facebook account, or setting up your account using your email. If you use your email, you will then be asked to create a password. After that you will be guided through the process as you enter your information.

Learn It

You now have an account on SoundCloud. Now what?

Before we learn how to publish content, let's go through some basics on creating the content that you will eventually publish.

Recording Tips

You will need a way to record your audio. Luckily, most smart phones have a decent microphone these days. Other options include:

  • Tablet
  • Laptop
  • Voice recorder

Things to consider when recording your audio:

  • Record in a quiet setting to reduce background noise unless the background noise is desired.
  • Depending on the content that you would like to record, it can help to write a script or an outline to follow beforehand.
  • If you're using a script, read through it several times before yous tart recording and figure out the pacing and voicing.
  • Create a test recording to check your microphone settings before you start recording the final product.

If you'd like to edit your audio but don't have editing software, you can download Audacity for free. Audacity is a free audio editor that works quite well.

If you'd like to add sound effects or music to your recording, I'd recommend using the YouTube Audio Library. The catalog of free-to-use music and sound effects is very impressive. One important thing to keep in mind is attribution for the content you are using. There are many options that don't require any attribution, but some that require attribution. I generally search with the "attribution not required" filter on when searching the catalog.
